A prior article on this topic is outdated, so here I’ve included important changes.
Tepoztlán has several different locations to buy food. I will cover five different markets, all within a ten minute walk from the town center. Each location has a different vibe, as you will see. The days that they are open vary, as does their focus.

The "local" markets are on Wednesdays and Sundays, near the Zocalo (central plaza) and government offices. The booths sell produce, meat, dry goods, plants, clothing, and other assorted items.
The Mercado opened about a year ago, in 2024. It has three stories with a parking lot in the basement and covers almost a full square block. This is quite different from the prior one which had booths covered with large tarps, and no running water or sewage system. This one has smaller stalls but it does have modern facilities that the old one lacked. Unlike the other markets I cover in this article, this main market is open every day.

On the second and third floors are areas for eating the yummy Mexican street foods, like tacos and quesadillas, prepared in the nearby booths. Here is a video showing the third floor, including segments that show privileged mountain views :
Sometimes there is entertainment outside the mercado on the plaza, like this rock and roll band:
These last two markets are a five minute walk downhill from the main mercado, and are only held on Fridays. Las Palmas is a half a block from the Mercado Organico (organic market). It does not sell freshly prepared food to eat on site, as the latter does. It specializes in produce grown on a regional permaculture farm.

This Friday market focuses on prepared food and handcrafted items. It provides picnic tables to sit while sampling the delicacies. It's a great place to meet people and have conversations, although sometimes the music is a little too loud.

This is the name of Tepoztlán's "supermarket." It is the largest grocery store and is centrally located. It has two adjoining buildings. One has produce, and the other has everything else.

An employee of the produce section very kindly let me interview him:
Now that you have seen those markets, you may be getting hungry for some Mexican food--Tepoztlán style. How about coming for a visit to check out these markets? Jump on the bandwagon now, as many are planning to relocate from the US to Mexico. Tepoztlán is a great retirement location. Its central location makes it an excellent base for exploring Mexico.
